The Origins of Humanity
According to ancient Chinese mythology, the creation of humanity is a tale that involves two powerful deities: Fuxi and Nüwa. These gods were responsible for shaping the world and its inhabitants. Their story is not only fascinating but also holds great significance in understanding the cultural values and beliefs of the ancient Chinese.
The Birth of Fuxi and Nüwa
Fuxi was born from an egg, symbolizing his divine origin. He was known as the "Great Deity" or "Divine Lord," while Nüwa was created from clay by Pangu, another important deity in Chinese mythology. She was revered as the "Goddess Mother" or "Mother Goddess." Both Fuxi and Nüwa held crucial roles in creating life on Earth.
The Creation Myth
One day, during a period known as the Primordial Chaos, Heaven and Earth were still separate entities. The universe consisted solely of these two elements with no living beings in sight. In order to create life, both heaven and earth needed to be united through marriage between their sons – Yandi (Heaven) married Houtu (Earth).
However, this union resulted in an imbalance due to their different natures: Yandi represented yang energy (masculinity), while Houtu represented yin energy (femininity). To restore equilibrium between heaven and earth, they produced twins - Changxiang () representing harmony between male-female energies - who then bore children called Jiahezi (), signifying joyous peace.
In response to this new development within heaven's realm came forth one final child named Shunshi (), meaning gentle benevolence; she married her brother's son named Hongzhang () resulting into birth of four great sages - Danzhu (), Xianyu (), Zhurong,,and Gonggong ().
From hereon began creation process led by those four great sages:
Danzhu: Created animals
Xianyu: Made mountains & rivers
Zhurong: Crafted vegetation & minerals
Gonggong: Established laws for humans
After these creations took place each sage returned back home leaving behind descendants which formed human society with different professions like farming , hunting etc., thus ending chaos era marking beginning civilization.
This mythological account reflects how China's early people believed that nature played a central role in human existence: humans are part-and-parcel with nature itself! It also portrays that every action must have balance otherwise there would be chaos!
As you read about other stories from 100 episodes series it becomes clear just how deeply embedded this idea runs through all aspects of ancient Chinese thought!
