在香港长大、上海交通大学土木工程系毕业的顾铁华，在1962年回港后，又凭借西德政府奖学金赴德深造工商管理。1975年定居香港，他创立了跨国集团联中企业有限公司，业务遍布实业、国际贸易、航运和房地产开发，拥有二十多个分支机构、三千余名员工。
自幼受家庭熏陶，顾氏对京剧和昆曲有着浓厚兴趣。他曾跟随张澍声学习京剧七年，并由甘贡三启蒙习唱昆曲。在俞振飞门下正式成为第一位海外入室弟子，其表演艺术得到了业界认可，被誉为可以媲美俞门专业，同时又有独特的“书卷气”。
自1990年代起，顾氏致力于恢复并录制昆剧传统剧目，并与同窗们合作编创新剧目，如《浣纱记·合纱、泛舟》、《顾曲周郎》等。这些作品受到两岸业界肯定，其中《浣纱记·合纱、泛舟》已被收入上海市戏曲学校昆曲教材。因此，他在1994年获得了中国戏曲学会颁发的“金兰奖”，成为了该奖项的首位得主。
在十五年的工作中，他成功出版了12张“中国昆曲精品集萃”DVD碟片。此外，他还创设了“顾铁华振兴昆曲基金”，支持国内及业余�2921 Kunqu Theater Groups and Students. With his outstanding contributions to the field of Kunqu, he is highly regarded by the domestic Kunqu community as a second Mu Dan.
In 2002, on the centennial anniversary of Adept Adept Adept's birth, he carefully compiled and published "The Outer Edition of The Mu Lu Quzi" in two volumes. This is the first publication of traditional quzi scores since "The Mu Lu Quzi" was published fifty years ago. In 2006, he was appointed as a member of the board of directors for China's Beijing Opera Art Foundation. He has also supported the publication of "Kunqu Masterpieces Collection" (compiled by Shanghai Drama Academy). In 2007, Tokyo University awarded him an honorary doctoral degree for his achievements in both career and art. In 2011, he served as a committee member for Hong Kong UNESCO Association.
