Peoples' Heroes Memorial Monument is located in the center of Tiananmen Square, symbolizing the sacrifices of Chinese people during long years of liberation wars and revolutionary movements. On September 30, 1949, at the first session of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC), it was decided to establish a memorial monument for these heroes who had made great contributions to China's independence. At that afternoon around six o'clock, representatives from all over China gathered on the square to hold an unveiling ceremony led by national leaders and other important figures.
Following this decision, there were extensive discussions across China regarding the design scheme for this monument. To ensure public support for this historic project, various open collection activities were organized allowing ordinary citizens to contribute their thoughts towards its construction.
The committee responsible for building Peoples' Heroes Memorial Monument was chaired by Beijing Mayor Peng Zhen while renowned architects Zheng Zhenduo and Liang Sicheng served as vice chairmen. The construction process involved seven subcommittees: design work; engineering; procurement of stones; art creation etc., each with its unique importance within the project framework. Moreover, a dedicated committee under leadership by Van Wenlan - director at Institute of Modern History - was established to research themes related to relief sculptures ensuring that artwork could adequately reflect key moments from Chinese revolutionary history.
Construction began on August 1st in 1952 and took six years before completion on April 22nd in 1958 with grand opening held on May first following year dedicating an eternal tribute to those unwavering people who had fought bravely against adversity.
