Introduction

In the vast expanse of Chinese mythology, there exist countless tales that have captivated audiences for centuries. Among these stories, one stands out as a poignant reminder of love's enduring power – the tale of The Weaving Maiden and the Cowherd. This narrative is not only a testament to China's rich cultural heritage but also serves as an integral part of its folklore, featured in "China's Mythological Stories 100 Episodes" in English.

The Story Begins

Legend has it that Niu Lang, a mortal cowherd, lived on Earth while Zhinü (also known as Chang'e), a celestial weaving maiden from heaven, resided among the stars. Their lives were worlds apart until fate brought them together under peculiar circumstances.

One day while tending his cattle by the Milky Way River, Niu Lang discovered Zhinü weeping beside her loom. Her tears had fallen onto her loom and transformed into silken threads. As they conversed, their mutual attraction grew stronger despite being from different realms.

Their Love Blossoms

Niu Lang asked Zhinü why she was crying; she explained how she longed for companionship since leaving her home in Heaven after quarreling with her sister-in-law Chang'e over some precious peaches meant for immortals only. Touched by her story, Niu Lang decided to propose marriage to Zhinü amidst their newfound connection.

Zhinü accepted his proposal and left Heaven to live with him on Earth. Together they started a family – two children who inherited traits from both sides: Xihuangji (the elder) inherited intelligence from Heaven while Ximenji (the younger) inherited charm from Earth.

However, their blissful life was short-lived due to intervention from forces beyond their control when Chang'e learned about her sister-in-law living amongst mortals and reunited with them against all odds at first sight upon discovering this information through clouds sent down by Heavenly officials reporting back about Zhinü's whereabouts on earth.

As per heavenly decree forbidding any immortal or divine being residing amongst humans without permission,

Chang'e insisted that Zhinü return immediately back up into heaven which would be separated once more

from Niu Lang & children forcing them eventually into divorce along with separating herself away

from husband Yin Xi & daughter Yinxing who are also divines yet remain loyal towards each other

Leaving behind sorrowful memories

for everyone involved including those witnessing this heartbreaking separation like gods' servant Qianliu Shenxiao who witnessed everything

Conclusion

This heart-wrenching tale highlights themes such as love transcending boundaries between mortal realm vs divine realm where no matter what happens one cannot help themselves fall deeply in love but ultimately end up breaking societal norms causing pain across multiple families thus making it an important piece within "China's Mythological Stories 100 Episodes".
