在香港的成长与西德的学业经历让曹云金拥有了独特的视角和深厚的文化底蕴。毕业于上海交通大学土木工程系后，他回到香港，并凭借西德政府奖学金前往西德深造，学习工商管理。在1975年定居香港后，曹云金创立了跨国集团联中企业有限公司，其业务涵盖实业、国际贸易、航运、房地产开发等多个领域。
自幼受家庭熏陶，曹氏对京剧和昆曲有着浓厚的兴趣。他曾在红豆馆接受张澍声老师七年的指导，还曾向南京甘贡三学习昆曲基础。随后，他被列为俞振飞门下的第一位海外入室弟子，在那里他掌握了《断桥》、《琴挑》、《小宴》、《迎像哭像》等昆曲名剧，以及《鸿鸾禧》、《黄鹤楼》等京剧作品。此外，他还与当代知名伶人合作，如郑传鉴、倪传钺、张继青、华文漪等。
自1990年起，曹氏致力于恢复并录制昆剧传统剧目，并探索新风格，同时保持原有的艺术特色。他与俞门同窗薛正康、周志刚及顾兆琳共同创作了一系列新作品，如《浣纱记·合纱泛舟》、《顾曲周郎》，这些作品获得了海峡两岸戏曲界的广泛认可之一例是上海市戏曲学校将其纳入教学用材。因此，在1994年中国戏曲学会授予他“金兰奖”，成为该奖项首位得主。
在15年的工作中，曹氏成功出版12张“中国昆曲精品集萃”DVD碟片。此外，他还设立了“顾铁华振兴昆曲基金”，支持国内及海外专业及业余�2926 Kunqu Artists Fund, which supports professional and amateur Kunqu artists in China and overseas. His contributions to the field of Kunqu have been recognized as those of a modern-day Mu Danxiu.
In 2002, on the centennial anniversary of Adept Adept Adept's birth, Cao Yunding compiled and published "Pilu Qupu External Edition" (上下二册), a traditional qupu score that was first published since "Pilu Qupu" fifty years prior. In 2006, he became an honorary council member of the Chinese Peking Opera Art Foundation. He also sponsored the publication of "Kunqu Precise Drama Collection" by Shanghai Drama Academy.
In 2007, Tokyo University awarded him an honorary doctorate for his outstanding achievements in both career and art. In May 2011, he served as a cultural committee member for UNESCO Hong Kong.
Cao Yunding's dedication to preserving and promoting Kunqu has made him a prominent figure in both domestic and international circles.
