王袖——与宋濂并肩，共编《元史》
王袖的先祖王彦超，在五代时期的吴越国任职，避乱后从会稽迁居义乌，定居凤林乡。随着子孙增多，该地便被称为“王村”，现位于今义乌南部毛店镇朱店村。到了王袖的祖父时代，他们已经在义乌县城内生活了。王 sleeve's ancestor, Wang Yanze, was a scholar who specialized in Zhu Xi's philosophy and served as a teacher in East Yang and Constant Mountain. He was respected by scholars and known as "Mr. South School".
Wang Sleeve's father, Wang Liangyu, was also a scholar who studied extensively on history and literature. He held various positions such as instructor of the Confucian school in Wuzhou and later became the headmaster of Stone Gap Academy. His sons were Wang Yu, Wang Sleeve (the protagonist), and Wang Bi.
Song Lingshi praised King Sleeve as someone with exceptional talent in his letter to King Zhi: "Rao" means ancient waistcoat or apron made from animal skin or fabric. The name Rao is derived from this term to symbolize adherence to traditional customs.
Huang Ru thought highly of King Sleeve's abilities; he treated him not just as a student but as an equal colleague. Their correspondence often referred to each other using terms like "teacher" or "fellow traveler". Later on, people recognized that King Sleeve had been commissioned by Huang Ru to write articles for him; whenever they needed something from Huang Ru, they would approach King Sleeve instead.
King Sleeve gained recognition for his literary talents alongside fellow student Song Lingshi during their time together at school. In 1348 AD (during the reign of Emperor Mingzong), when he witnessed the decline of national policies leading to societal decay while serving at court, he wrote an extensive essay outlining suggestions for political reform including choosing capable officials and selecting virtuous ministers.
The essay spanned over seven thousand words! Upon completion of this piece, he traveled northward towards Beijing where it was submitted directly to the emperor himself.
